After receiving a Ph.D. from Cornell University, I taught 3 1/2 years at Linfield College, McMinnville, Oregon before accepting a position in the History Department at the University of Notre Dame in January 1984. Thereafter I taught courses in Chinese and Japanese history, served as an Associate Dean in the College of Arts and Letters, and as chair of the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures. My research was on Chinese piracy and the origins of the Chinese Triad Society (Tiandihui) during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. I was
the first woman to be tenured, promoted through the ranks, and retired from the
History Department.
