Gerald L. Bruns was educated by the Sisters of St. Joseph, the Brothers of the Holy Cross, and the Jesuits at Marquette University, graduating in the class of 1960. He earned his doctorate from the University of Virginia in 1965.
He taught at Ohio State University (1965-70), the University of Iowa (1970-85), and the University of Notre Dame (1985-2008).
He was twice awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences.
He is the author of ten books, the most recent of which is Interruptions: The Fragmentary Aesthetic in Modern Literature (University of Alabama Press, 2018).
