I live in Long Beach, CA., and continue to be academically active in retirement. In 2018, I received a distinguished lifetime scholarly achievement award from the Western Literature Association. As part of the event, I presented a lecture, "The Streets of Laredo," which I am currently expanding into a book. One chapter deals with a Mexican-sponsored Irish colony in Texas from the 1830s which may have created the famous cowboy ballad, "Streets of Laredo." Another chapter discusses the influence of this ballad on the 1947 poem, "Streets of Laredo," by the Anglo-Irish
modernist poet, Louis MacNeice.
