Stephen M. Hayes, former Entrepreneurial Spirit Endowed Business Librarian joined the University in 1974 as Reference Librarian. In 1976 he became the Reference and Public Documents Librarian and headed the Documents Center. The Center houses the Federal Depository Library and the European Union depository collection. In 1994, he accepted an appointment as the Business Service Librarian to the Mendoza College of Business. In 1995, he opened the Thomas Mahaffey Business Information Center (BIC), the predominately electronic business branch library of the Hesburgh Libraries system. In 2014 the name changed to the Mahaffey Business Library (MBL). When opened, this all-electronic nature of the business library was unique among the top 50 business schools and cutting edge for its time.
Born in Detroit Michigan, Hayes received his undergraduate degree in child psychology from Michigan State University in 1972 and has a Master in Librarianship from Western Michigan University in 1974. In 1979 he received a second master’s degree in Administration (MSA) from the University of Notre Dame.
Mr. Hayes’ field of research is Federal Information Policy. He has twice served on the Depository Library Council the advisory body to the Public Printer of the United States --1994-96 -- appointed, Council Secretary. 1995-96; reappointed, 2010-2013. He has reviewed and commented on legislation and regulation for the American Library Association (ALA) and the Congressional Joint Committee on Printing. He represented ALA at the 5th Solomon’s Island Group meeting dealing with Public Access to Government Information. He has served on various business information related advisory board including EBSCO, North American Business School Advisory Board, Gale, Dun & Bradstreet, and ProQuest.
