Professor Strieder earned a BS degree in Chemistry from Pennsylvania State University in 1959 and a PhD in Physical Chemistry from Case Institute of Technology in 1963. He held postdoctoral research fellowships for 2 years at the University of Brussels during 1963-1965 and for 1 year at the University of Minnesota during 1965-1966. He joined the University of Notre Dame College of Engineering faculty in 1966. In the next 44 years he taught over 12 courses for numerous graduate and undergraduate students.

Professor Strieder published several research books (Springer-Verlag and AIChE Press), over 90 technical journal publications, as well as numerous presentations at technical society meetings, universities, and industrial seminars. He was active in the local community serving as a consultant for CTS Corporation in Elkhart, Honeywell Corporation in South Bend, the State of Indiana Corporation of Science and Technology, and the South Bend Ethanol Plant.

Professor Strieder's areas of interest include thermodynamics of equilibrium and irreversible processes, heat and mass transport in porous media, interfacial phenomena, chemical engineering reaction systems, statistical mechanics, kinetic theory, and applied mathematics.
