James Edward Houghton: July 1, 1922 ~ October 22, 2022 (age 100)

James Edward Houghton, 100, passed away on Saturday October 22, 2022 in Mishawaka, Indiana.  He was born on July 1, 1922 in Buffalo, New York to the late Ernest Houghton and Gertrude Koch.   James was married on February 12, 1949, in South Bend, Indiana to Margaret Houghton who preceded him in death on December 9, 2014. James taught at the University of Notre Dame in the Engineering department for 40 years. He served our nation proudly in the U.S. Army during WWII.

James is survived by his two sons, Jim (Celeste) Houghton of Mishawaka and Richard (Marsha Oates) Houghton of Washington DC; four grandchildren, Elizabeth (Edward) Thompson, Matthew, Andrew, and Charlotte Houghton; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harold and Bob Houghton; and Melissa Houghton. James was preceded in death by his grandson Paul, his wife and parents, as well as by his two sisters, Mary Corwin and Jane Marnocha, brother, Ernest Houghton, and two half-brothers Jack and Richard Delanty.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, October 28, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church, 2114 E. Jefferson Blvd., South Bend, IN 46617.  Interment will take place immediately following the service at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Notre Dame, IN.  Friends may visit with the family on Thursday, October 27, 2022 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at Palmer Funeral Home – River Park Chapel, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend, IN.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in honor of James can be made to the Center for Hospice Care, 501 Comfort Pl., Mishawaka, IN 46545.
