In Memoriam: Louis James Berzai, Retired Professor and Director of Student Advising for CAPP in the College of Arts and Letters

Louis James Berzai

Louis James Berzai, 81, residing in Granger, passed away at 10:00 PM Monday, January 10, 2022, in North Woods Village, Mishawaka. He was born September 3, 1940, in South Bend to the late Louis and Elizabeth (Ewaniec) Berzai and remained a lifelong area resident.

Louis earned a bachelor's degree in general studies in 1984 and a Master of Arts degree in 1995. He was employed as a professor in the College of Arts and Letters at the University of Notre Dame, where he served as Assistant Director and Director of Student Advising for CAPP before retiring in 2013.

On February 16, 1974, in South Bend, Louis married the former Carolyn J. Smith, who survives. In addition to his loving wife of 47 years, Louis is survived by three daughters, Laurie (Jeremy) Owens of Mishawaka, Tammy Berzai-Stults of Mishawaka and Jamie (Mathew) Sikora of Round Rock, TX; and three grandchildren, Trinity Sikora, Noelle “Belle” Sikora and Gwendolyn Sikora.  Louis was preceded in death by three sisters, Barbara Ann, Elizabeth Mary and Josephine Berzai, who were tragically killed in a car/train accident on January 7, 1956, which also took the life of his mother.

Louis joined the Data Processing Management Association in 1967 and served as International President in 1986.
